An Outlook Like Mendi's

“Living in a world where there is a 70 plus percent unemployment rate for people who are blind or visually impaired is difficult – and for four years, I was a part of that.”

Just like any other 29 year old, Mendi Evans enjoys the finer things in life – the computer, blogging, twitter, or as Mendi would describe it, “all those fun, addicting, social networking things – not to mention music, which she would describe as her “sanity.”

The only thing that makes her unique from other young ladies is, at birth, Mendi was diagnosed with Leber’s Congenital Amaurosis, but that has not slowed her down.

Irregardless of her blindness, Mendi continues to carry the utmost positive attitude.

“I think blindness is almost an advantage – since you can’t see – you are sometimes less judgmental,” says Mendi, Bosma Enterprises Employee. “You can’t look at someone and make a certain decision about them – you are less caught up in an image.”

Without a doubt, Mendi always seems to look to the brighter side of every situation. That alone is enough to award her with January’s 2011 Employee of the Month Award, but Mendi is much more complex.

With a strong passion for music, Mendi walked away with a Music Business degree from the prestigious Belmont University, located in Nashville, TN.

“I would say I have over 10,000 songs on my computer at home,” she says. “Music is one of my favorite pass times – I used to be an online DJ.”

Mendi was not only an online DJ, she also used to write album and concert reviews. When Mendi graduated from college, she hoped to pursue a career in music. After four long years of being unemployed, Mendi began to get a little antsy, until she found Bosma Enterprises.

“Bosma Enterprises gave me my first job, which was a huge deal,” she says. “Living in a world where there is a 70 plus percent unemployment rate for people who are blind or visually impaired is difficult – and for four years I was a part of that.”

Mendi is forever thankful for her Bosma Enterprises family and is glad there are places like Bosma that employ people who are blind or visually impaired. Her job hunt ended after she was hired to work in the Contact Solutions department at Bosma Enterprises.

With all the passion and hard work Mendi has put into her career at Bosma Enterprises, she still thanks everyone else for her success.

“I am blessed to have a really awesome set of parents,” says Mendi. “They treated me like their daughter who happened to be blind, not their blind daughter – there is a difference.”

Everyday Mendi takes pride in her job and continues to be the best employee she can.

Over time, Bosma Enterprises has given Mendi more responsibilities and opportunities that have helped her grow as an individual and as an employee.

“I will certainly continue to accept more responsibilities and do the best that I can for this organization.”
