Orientation & Mobility

Orientation is the knowledge of where one is in relation to what is around them, and mobility is the act of moving within the physical environment from point A to point B. Together they form O&M.
O&M builds upon itself. Clients usually master indoor skills before progressing to residential travel or crossing streets at four-way stops. They then advance to business travel, crossing streets at traffic lighted intersections, and using public transportation if desired. During O&M clients usually use the
long white cane, which not only provides protection but also identification when navigating in the
community.
O&M Skills develop:
- Sighted Guide Techniques
- Self-Protective Techniques
- Long Cane Techniques
- Residential & Business Travel Skills Including Routes And Street Crossings
- Travel Within A Store
- Use Of Public Transportation
- Use Of Low Vision Aids
